Peter Fletcher packs the common room at the Library

Classical guitarist Peter Fletcher played to a full room at Hedberg Library tonight. I always find it exhilarating watching someone who is at the top of their craft performing. I can't say that I have a huge interest in classical guitar, but when I read that Fletcher is playing Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in February, I wasn't going to miss him when he was playing right next door to my apartment!
The music was...awesome. After a standing ovation, Fletcher actually performed an encore. I admit I was half hoping he would pull out some Jimmy Hendrix, but his selection of a lullaby seemed more appropriate considering the hour and the surprising number of children in attendance for the show.
Even better, I had the chance to speak with Fletcher after the performance. It turns out he is booked for Carnegie in February, 2007, and again in 2008. Very cool. He said he was very excited to play in the historic musical venue, and also nervous. The only thing I can imagine comparing it to would be stepping out onto the dirt of Fenway Park to play second base in an actual game.
Fletcher actually lives in New York City but spends an unbelievable amount of time traveling everywhere across the country playing intimate venues like the Hedberg Library. After a show, he packs his guitar into his sedan and he's off to the next town.
According to his program, Carnegie will be his debut in New York. Nothing like jumping right into the deep end.
Update: Fletcher has indeed played for Bill Clinton. I sent Fletcher an email last night because his bio on his website states that he played at a Democratic fundraiser, but I wasn't sure if Clinton was actually there. I'm thinking that playing your guitar for a former President means you are probably pretty good at it.
Also, Fletcher is on the cover of The Gazette today. Check it out if you get a chance.
